I bought a baby gold saum near a month ago, I picked the one with the longest fins hopeing to get a male , It's fins where ripped by the other baby saums in the tank at the store, his (possibly) fins have not healed. and he is still active and eats regularly. I was wondering if I should treat the tank with melafix, but his tank mate a near full grown jack dempsey seems to be fine , will melafix have a negative effect on healthy fish? ALSO My jack dempsey has never shown any aggressive / territorial behaviour to his tank mate and sometimes appears to bring food to the gold saum, is this odd behaviour for jack dempseys?

Maybe the JD is trying to give the Goldsaum a false sense of security so he can get close enough to deliver a lethal blow.

All kidding aside, I say bump the temp up a degree a day til its at 83-84, add a few tablespoons of Aquarium Salt and give it time. It sounds like the goldsaum is still very much a juvie and should repair his fins fine. And If you have the room, you may want to set up a 30 gal or better yet a breeder 40 gal and let the GT grow out and then reintroduce him when he is fully healed and large enough to defend himself.
