I was driving by a local golf course today and saw a decent size pond in the front. It got me thinking that I never see any liners. Same with the ponds at condos and Apartments. Does anyone know how they make these ponds? Do they use liners then put sand over it?

I think part of how they would achieve not using liners would be to compact the soil/clay really tightly in the pond area. Not really sure though. There's only really 2 reasons for a liner that I can see: keep water from seeping into loose soil and out of the pond, and keeping mud/soil from "dissolving" into the pond, giving it that muddy look that you can't see anything in.

You wouldnt see a liner on any well landscaped pond.It would be covered by a layer of clay.
Also golf courses are often on clayey soil, and a pond lined with clay would hold water without a liner.

A lot of golf course, condo, and industrial ponds are concrete as well.
