i read the DIY on how to make a sump out of a 55 gal but im gonna make mine out of a 20g long i have sitting here for my 125g

i pick out a pump to return the water, Quiet One 3000
but i don't understand how to get the water from my 125 to the 20g
i mean
i know i have to plumb some kind of u shaped thing and with the help of gravity it will suck it down in the 20 gallon, but i really still don't understand how it works like what happens id the power goes out and it still siphoning the water out of the 125

but how do i know the flow rate of the size pipe i need to match the pump returning the water

you need a overflow box (ebay) or get your tank drilled. Aqualifter is what you use to get the siphon stated once the power come back on, it connects to the U-tube. You will also want to drill a 1/4" hole on the return pipes just 1/2" below water level to break the siphon once u have a power outage and make sure you test your system to see if your sump can contain all the water that flows down. its a good idea to put a ball valve on the incoming tube to slow the water down if needed

Im new to this too. What about pumping up to the sump and letting it overflow back into the tank waterfall style or through a tube?? I guess this would kind of be like a HOT on steroids now that I write it out. If the power died you wouldnt have as much of a disaster. The other question is how wet and how dry? How much media do I use and how wet should they be? From the pictures it looks like some are submerged and others are not. Is a 10g sump for a 60 gal tank worth the effort? Is there a rule of thumb for sump to tank size?

As for an elevated sump, there are good threads utilizing that idea.

As for sump size/divisions/wet portion; there's some threads debating that as well. In summation most seem to go with:
  • sump = 1/3 of your tank
  • media = 1/2 of the sump
  • wet = 1/3 of your media, dry (trickle) = 2/3

Awesome, exactly the advice I was looking for. I have a few ideas im going to try out. I'll keep everyone posted.
