For a decent inexpensive pump, I have had good luck with Rio Aqua pumps.

+1 on the Rio. Work great for the cost if your just moving water. Didnt work so well for a pond pump. Couldnt handle the debris getting sucked in like a magdrive does.
Im looking to use it on a future sump build.

keep in mind when choosing ur pump, how much of vertical it has to pump and what size of tubing.
most pump out there lied about their pumping capability.
what u want to see is their spec and cut it atleast by half to what they say on the chart with what u need.
it doesnt apply if u put that pump in the tank just for aeration

I haven`t found that to be true.
When testing the output of the pumps I have used, they were pretty close to what they said they would do.
Admit, I have no flow meters.
Just a couple of buckets and a timer.
I have set the buckets up to mimic tank and sump.
Used the same size pipe/tubing that would be used for the final assembly.
Marked the 1 gallon level in the "tank".
Run pump and timer.
A few times, I even got better performance than I expected.

r u talking about vertical capability?
i agree if its just regular pumping job not against the gravity force(hence vertical pumping power)
