Alright I went to favorite Petco in my area. And I notice that they had a 15 inch full grown tiger oscar in there...but he had hole thing going on. The pet personal was saying this came from him eating live goldfish.....is this true?

Also, I have two small covict cichilds in a breeder tank, that I got from a friend who cichilds just keep breeding like no other..:WHOA:.Also they are male and female . When they get to a good size is it ok to put them in with my Oscar?
( The only reason I ask is because my wife has banned me from getting another tank , we already have 3 tanks)

what size would the Oscar be and what tank would he go in?

dude he needs a 75g asap, a 15in fish in a 12in wide tank doesnt work well as you should already be able to see, and yes cons can go with O once they are larger but you will need at least a 100g or they will terrorize him when breeding, cons can be vicious. goo dluck with him. oh and there are many thoughts as to the cause of HITH and an unhealthy diet is one of them but most likely its because he was being kept in bad conditions since he was previously with someone who fed him goldfish and most likely turned him into the store because he got too big for their tank

Ok i did not adopt the fish in the store....he was adopted by someone already. I was talking about his holes in his head does this come from giving O's live food like goldfish?

As for my con's as soon as they get bigger and the O won't eat them they are ok to be in the same tank?

I agree. HITH is the term for the holes in the head. from what i understand, its not 100% known what causes it, but bad diet and stressful conditions are thought to be the main cause, so yes it could be the goldfish, but i think those small petco tanks are a large part of it too.

This is Good Advise -18" wide tank would help greatly a 24" wide tank would be more optimal for a 15" Oscar. Hith is rather easy to get rid IF your fish has an appropriate enviorment, it might be more difficult in a 55. The cure - good clean water and a low stresss enviorment.

When the Cons get larger they will be a serious threat to your Oscar. It would be OK to keep just a single male or female in there with him, but when cons are breeding, and this is all of the time they are fearless and homicidal. Two breeding Cons can quickly kill a fish that is much larger than them. Also if your wife won't let you get a larger tank it might be better to re home the Oscar.

Yes, goldfish contain thiaminase which directly causes thiamine deprivation and may contribute to HITH.

+1
Not to mention goldfish have no nutritional value. Plus, feeder goldfish are usually kept in crap water... which can also contribute to HITH.
