Just curious to see what you're all feeding. I need to order some food tonight and kinda wanted to try something new.

I'm currently feeding some generic hikari cichlid pellet but I'm wondering if there's something better that's affordable.

This would be for a green terror, Nicaraguans and firemouth.

New life spectrum is considered the "best" ingredient-wise and is commonly available. My fish like it as well. Omega one makes some good foods- I ilke their kelp formula for more vegetarian-based diets. I have heard good things about "bug bites" pellets as well.

NLS may have the best ingredients, but I've found many fish reluctant to take it & it turns the water brown. I've been looking for alternatives. I've had good luck feeding a variety of pellets/sticks/flakes from Ken's Fish, but I've seen members on here run down the content of that food.

Water changes are more important than the absolute best fish food IMO. Feed a good quality food, try to offer a variety & change a TON of water & your fish will thrive.

I've been feeding NLS for over 15 years, and never had the water turn brown. There are lots of choices one can make regarding food brands and formulas, but what your definition of affordable is, and mine, may be two different things. Quality food generally equates to having to feed less, so you have to consider more than just the sticker price. As already mentioned over the long haul buying in bulk size containers is also the most economical way to purchase food.

Very good advice. I will add keeping ones fish in a stress free (as possible) environment is also a key to keeping fish healthy long term.

I've had good luck with Mike's Cichlids sinking pellets. It's $10 for a 24oz bag, but shipping brings the cost up a good bit. I believe it's $6.5 for one bag, but you can get 4 bags for $13 shipping.
