so i had a bad daywhen my sis decided to feed my fish salmon and messd up my tank and i hadda do a major water change and clean my filter but while cleaning my filter my carbon bag rippd making me have to put a new one in their....no it seems my algee died off a lilttle and my water is cloudy...will it all grow back and clear up???

Howdy,

First of all, what biomedia do you already have in your filter, what are your nitrite and ammonia levels??

Secondly, no worries about the carbon - it should only be used temporarily to remove medication. It has no place in everyday filtration - throw it out. Third, cloudy is a sign of bacterial bloom. On one hand that's good - it means you have beneficial bacteria in your tank. On the other hand it means that you need to give the bacteria a better home (toss the carbon out and fill the space with quality biomedia such as Eheim EhFi Substrat).

Lastly, sorry I couldn't resist, salmon can be a great treat for /\/\onsters ;)
--> see Salmon - it's what's for dinner

Carbon is a common media and it has some advantages...

But for proper use it needs to be changed frequently...

While it does have it's advantages it is not "necessary" and a very large number of hobbyists (myself included) choose not to use it...

i use carbon,
idk if u dont have anything to replace the carbon id keep it in,
but carbon is not the best it needs replacing alot like they said
once every 1 or 2 weeks is recommended...Theres better substitutions for carbon out there and the only reason im still using mine is because i have a ton of it and need to use it up or else i'd go and get some rechargeable stuff....
But u would be ok with a cpl bags of ehfisubstrat thats some good stuff,
and even if u decide to not use carbon or any ammo-nit remover u should always keep some on hand just incase a big spike or any other emergency...that will help
