So I am still in the process of setting up my 100 gal reef tank. I ordered some live rock today. Pretty good price. Fiji standard for 3.35 a lb shipped overnight (this includes the shipping cost) Unfortunately even with the price I could not afford to get as much as I wanted. What kind of rock can I use to put under the live rock that will eventually turn to live rock as well. Could I use lava rock or something similar that is porous yet significantly cheaper than even what I was able to find for live rock? I would like to find a couple of big pieces of something that I can stack the live rock on top of.

I wouldn't go with Lava rock it tends not to work that well and can leach stuff into and from the water.

lava rock works fine make sure its all grey no other colors. i have 75 lbs and its taking color and growing amazing

i got some base rock from liverockusa.com it was a little denser but it worked out well, you will have to email them directly to get an exact price, but i belive it was around .49 a lb. another good form of rock i have had luck with is lace rock, which alot of places sell fairly cheap as well.

try bulkreefsupply.com. Also, from experience, at first you're going to want to pack your tank with live rock, but as things grow out, you're gonna wish you didn't use so much rock. So let the corals make the reef, not the rock.

for cheap base rock just type - cheap base rock for sale on a search engine like yahoo or google and you'll get ton's of hit's.

dunno if you've any small time dealers around but in phoenix theres a guy who'll sell you nice fiji live rock for 3$ a lbs and dry "live" rock for 1$ a lb. so say you're on a 100$ budget, you could get 20lbs of the fiji and use 40lbs of the dry stuff as a base.
