good batterys for cameras?

hi just bought a new digital camera it uses four AA's and they last for about 40 pics camera has 50 times total zoom so this is the problem . I used the digital panasonic's that came with it then i tryed some regular batteries got about 5 pics ,is there a better way the manual says not to use lithuim dont understand why? anybody have any ideas ?? trying to save the earth here :D
 
I've had good luck with the metal nickle hydrides. I dont use them in cameras but they've worked really well for me in other applications.

just bought some 15min quick chargables taken 100 pics and still going and going and going :D
