You would need a receiver or an amplifier. A dvd player will not drive the speakers. Do not go HTIB or BOSE. BOSE is just better sound through marketing and will not provide you with the sound like you want. BOSE and Slipknot dont mix
If you want to tick the neighbors off, I would look into an old pair of cerwin vega 12" towers. They are one of the best speakers for what you are looking for and will easily keep up with the fast heavy bass. If you need to go cheaper, you could always look for the KLH brand towers that utilize a 12" driver.
Amost all of todays speaker setups usually utilize a 8" or smaller driver because most use a subwoofer for the 50Hz and below sounds. HT is my main hobby, besdies fish so if you would like any help shoot me a pm.
