I've been picking up hints and tips here and there on constructing filters, but I would like a more comprehensive overview. Is there a book out there that covers the various types of filters used in home and commercial aquaria, with useful info on design and construction?

not sure but i consider the filtration/setup forum my virtual book on filtration. you can pretty much find everything in this thread and if you can find it, just start a new thread and ask away :D lol

Forums are great for specific questions, but I want something a little more comprehensive. A thread title like "What are all the kinds of filters, what are their pros and cons, and how do I build them?" is just asking for trouble.

Thanks, Gr8KarmaSF. I've looked through a lot of those builds. There's some good info, but also a lot of stuff from people who don't really know what they're doing. Even the competent builds are for specific applications, and don't explain the general principles behind the setup. Kinda the same with forums; you have to sift through a lot of dross to find a few nuggets of valuable information, and it's difficult to tell which is which without a good grounding in the basic information.

I really would prefer a book, written by someone who knows what he is talking about, that I can feel confident referring to.

Sure there's one, it's the one waiting for you to write it!

j/k. But to my knowledge that aren't any [widely available, at least] books on aquarium filtration specifically. Moreover, highly advanced "DIY" filtration.

Howdy,

How about an Eheim user manual :D
