Thanks for the quick answer! But arent all of the cats you describe a bit big for a 48 inches long tank? I really want a nice predatory cat, but I dont want it to be cramped in my tank...

All those fish should be ok in your tank you have the depth and all the sizes are full grown. The only one you would have to move on is the Pictus shame as stunning looking fish. Had my Clarias for 2 years from 1" he is now about 14-15" and can fold him self in 1/2 . The real problem with cats most are nocturnal so having a tank with one large specimen can be a bit of a strange one you have a tank with hiding places and a hidden fish most off the time. A tank like that would be spot on for a Hoplias Malabarics a.k.a Wolf fish/Mud Characin they get to 20” but don’t swim about a lot another nocturnal predator but look cool.

i would go with an albino channel cat, reg. channel cat., or giraffe cat.

A clarias or lima would be fine in that tank, yeah maybe the pictus would be a bit big.

I've never seen in real life or photos a clarias or lima bigger than 18" or so in captivity, so in all likelyhood they won't get past that.

I have a clarias and lima in my 180, I like them both a lot. Both absolute pigs too, eat loads.

Ok, well, I have had a clarias in the past, and he was a nice fish, but I dont want one again... And to be honest, I dont like the look of the shovelnose...It looks a bit fragile. Any other suggestions?

BTW thanks for all the answers!

Limas are not fighters, but not that fragile either. They are a cool fish.

How about a tigrinus? You could get away with one in your tank, they rarely cruise the length of the tank and spend half their time waggling vertically.

What about the Asian RTC or a mystus wyckii? Both really cool, really mean cats that shouldn't get more than around 18" in captivity.

asian RTC = hemibagrus nemerus and mystus wyckii is now called hemibagrus wyckii.
