i was offered a 14' boat with motor and trailer for 400 bucks.

the only problem i have is that the boat is from 1977 and the motor hasnt been turned on 6y years ago. i checked it out today and it seems to be in good condition. wires are in good condition and registration is updated. its really dirty and theres alot of loose parts. is it a good deal or should i keep looking?

If it floats and the engine has good compression it don't sound like too bad of a deal as long as the motor isn't black in color with "mercury" decals on the side. :grinno:

You need to post up more info and pics!! Check the bottom hull and transom. Those will the key points for problems. Is it fiberglass? If so look for hidden hull patches. Do a compression test on the motor. It only takes a few minutes. If its a old motor you will have to pre mix full and thats a pain.

Given the year I would probably pass on it.

the whole boat is aluminum and has no leaks. the dude poured water in it and nothing leaked. i dont know if thats the prper way to know but it proved his point.if the motor doesnt work then i will buy a used one or just rebuild it

So its just a 14ft with no flooring in it? Like a john boat? If so and you are gambling on the motor it is not worth $400. You can buy a new or like new 14ft. John boat for that price. Pouring water in a boat does not put enough water pressure to know if it leaks. If you want to find out float it and hop in along with a fat friend.

Outboard Rebuilds are not cheap and even a 9hp outboard is around $1,500 new and a 50hp $7500-$10,000. Sounds like you already have your mind made up on buying it though. Its your $$$

how bigs the lake ur usin it on? a 16fter is not very balanced even on a smaller lake, good deal for 400 bucks but you could build it up and sell it but not good for larger lakes but maybe rivers?

Sounds like a steal. If you are handy, change all fluids, clean the carbs, change fuel filter and water pump and you are rockin! Besides, used motors that are 4-6 yrs old have had their depreciation if you need to repower cheaply.
