My lfs offered me a breeding pair of Caribe Piranha for $450, both fish are roughly 1ft long, is it a good deal? or is the price too high?

comment please

thanks

;)

can they prove that those are indeed breeding pair of caribes and guarantee that they will breed after you purchase them? if so have they sign a written statement, if they do not breed within certain period of time they would take the fish back with full refund.
other wise I wouldn't spend the money as there's less than a handful of cases that caribas were bred in captivity.
even they are a breeding pair caught in the wild during courtship or in the process of laying and fertilizing eggs there's no guarantee that they will breed in your tank, even if they had bred in the lfs before.
but it's your money, as long as you think it's worth the investment then go for it. but personally I wouldn't.

good deal if they are actually breeding and they breed for you

like jp said theres no guarentee they will breed once conditions are changed.

do they have proof they have bred?

There might not even be a handful of cases where Cariba have bred in caprtivity. With that being said, the cases where this apparentely did occur, there is not much documentation supporting the fact. Of course this does not mean it did not happen.

With that being said, if the species are nice, $450 for two foot long Cariba is a very reasonable price.... just do not buy them with the expecation that they would breed.... would be my advice.

I would do it anyway.. wth right.. you only live once..plus two caribe in 1 tank is sure to spin the heads of people that know piranha.. and if they do breed you can go straight to the bank with the cash from those fry..

Well, the lfs said they got the pair as a trade in, and the fish were bred in their previous owner's tank (I doubt they will write a statement)

and the two caribe are kept in a 20G tank at the moment (LFS) < felt sorry for them

:irked:

Ty for the input! I'd see what I can do about it!

^^

if you have the space for them and really want them (you should rescue them from 20g) I say try to bargain the price down, offer them like $200 to start with, maybe you'll end up with $300 something for them. :) or wait long enough and they'll have to sell them cheap...
you sure those are not reds?
I've seen ft long caribes at one of my lfs, $75 each cuz they thought they are reds.

they have a blue shine and black ear behind the gill, by plain sight, it's obviously not a red

Last caribe locally went for like $100 @ 4" - I thought that was real salty since they used to sell 1-2" juvis for $10-$20, was a real looker tho. Personally I like to get my fish as juvies not adults, theres no way to tell exactly how old they are. For $450 I'd be thinkin' juvi shoal but thats just me.

The $100 caribe isn't the only salty price @ my LFS. $200 for a 4-5" elongatus, that fish has been there for 6 mo and ain't goin nowhere. Shame too he eats pellets.

I'm with you there, you can get a nice shoal at that price, if they do breed that is if you can provide the condition to trigger breeding), you may have more than just one breeding pairs from the shoal. and it's much more fun to watch them grow from couple inches to monster size.
