Anyone got any good suggestions for dithers? Currently around 8.5" (21cm) just looking for some extra activity in the tank.

If you think they're too small for the gar to chase after and eat, you could try cardinal/green neon/rummynose tetras.

He still takes Rosy Reds, so i would be hesitant to go for anything smaller yet. Right now I think deeper bodied fish might be better?

I see, so it looks like he's not big enough to regard fish as too small to eat.

There is always a risk mixing things with gars, but for deep bodied species it's hard to beat silver dollars.

Severums, convicts, Texas cichlids, bichirs. Just naming a few of the fish I’ve kept with gars recently
I've thought about cichlids, but ime, they have always been too aggressive toward any other fish. Used to have a 125 full of Malawi's and they would constantly attack anything else that went in the tank. I know I cant guarantee any fish will get along, but I would prefer to steer clear of cichlids, IF possible. Bichir and Silver Dollars seem to be the most common suggestions based on other posts and tank shots I've seen from other members on here
