I see so many people on here that have some amazing pieces of driftwood! Where do you find them? I live in Florida around the Clearwater area. Many of the areas that might have driftwood are brackish waters and I have freshwater. A little afraid to just grab something out of those waters for my tank but I really, really want a good centerpiece for my 75 gallon. I don't want to spend a ton of money on something from a company cause frankly they cost to much and all they did is pull it from a stream anyway. Any suggestions?

It doesn't matter if you find the water in a brackish area, because you'll need to clean it, and you can soak it in freshwater and keep changing the water out until the salt is gone.

I didn't know that! I figured that it would always retain some of that salt and mess with my water chemistry. Nice to know, thanks.

Intrsting thread topic. Been wanting to do the same for my 55. I'm going to do a creek walk today to see what i can find. Any tips on collecting from freshwater stream/creeks?

I am fortunate to live in montana. I can go out on any given day and find amazing pieces. Im sure there are freshwater sources around you somewhere. To speed up the cleaning/leaching process I use a steel drum and build a oven about half way up the sides of the drum and build a fire under it and boil the df for hours. It releases alot of tannins, disinfects it and helps it sink. Petty cheap and easy!
