Good filtration 90 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats is great for a 90gal.

I run all 75 and 90gal tanks and always pair up a large HOB (AC110 in my cases) and a larger cannister (404, 304, or XP3).

Yep with a powerhead as well. How often should i change me filter media amd do water changes I'm every 3 weeks for my WCs and about 1 month for carbon replacements in my filters

Most recommend once a week 30-50%. This does depend on bio load how ever. I suggest you buy a test kit, test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates. This way you can monitor your water quality and know for sure when you need to change some water.

Weekly 50% water changes with gravel vac whether you need it or not, you will be rewarded with a fast growing and healthy oscar. In reality, oscars are so messy that you will probably need that schedule anyway.

Never change the filter media, just rinse it when it starts to clog. Scrap the carbon and go with more bio-media in your canister.

So you recomend no carbon? And what about the emperor, what do i put in the extra filter cage? Im worried coz ive lagged on the tank for a while due to being quite busy! I need to change the filter media and do a water change. im under the thought pattern that you shouldnt do a water change and filter change the same time due to bacteria loss...and thoughts?

You can put ceramic noodles (Biomax etc.) in the Emperor trays and just rinse out the cartridges in dechlorinated water. You can reuse them until they start to fall apart.
Do not worry about cleaning a filter and doing a water change at the same time as little bacteria are free floating so you will not remove much when doing the water change.
I would stagger maintenance on the filters though, don't clean out both at the same time.

I would keep the carbon. Carbon is there to process anything the beneficial bacteria will not. Such as all the things we put in our tanks every day, from residue on hands, fish bags etc.

Also. I'd monitor my nitrates. Only you can know how often to do a water change. It depends on the size of the fish, the amount of food, and stocking levels. The only reason we do water changes is to A, remote nitrates, and B, removes built up metals, minerals etc.(this happens by topping off from evaporation.

I'd just monitor my nitrates, and do water changes as necessary. Meaning either nitrates go over 20-40, or water evaporation has happened.
