I think my heater burned out or something because it no longer heats up. It lights up and says it is on but it produces no heat. I noticed when I cleaned my tank today it the water was super cold. (my thermometer broke and I keep forgetting to get a new one). I suppose the cold water would explain my fish's sluggishness and stressed looks and lack of color. My tank is 85 gallons and its 6ft long. I don't want to have a heater in the middle because its ugly. With a 6ft tank would one heater efficiently heat the whole thing if it sits on one side, I would guess one side would get hotter than the other? Would it be better to get 2 less powerful heaters and put one on each end of the tank or would one be sufficient? I don't want to pay tons of money on a heater, but I do need to get one.

Heaters from Jager, Hydor and Aquarium Pharmaceuticals RENA are very popular and for a reason, dependability. I have always run 2 heaters on my tanks, one at each end set to the same temp. That way neither one has to do all the work, they are out of the way, and i also size both of the heaters to do the job by itself so if one fails , either one will continue to do the job on its own. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or in the case of a heater malfunction, the possible loss of prized livestock.

Don't but Tetra. I recently needed a couple heaters in a hurry and went to Walmart to get them. They both had water droplets inside in less then a month. They have a 2 year warranty, but what good is that if they are crap?

I'm a fan of aqueon pros (the black ones not the glass tubes) myself. There cheap, work great and readily available; not to mention they can stand up to a thrashing or two from aggressive cichlids.

For your tank I'd suggest 2x 150w versus a single 300w.

+1

I got one of these a month ago to replace an older one and I have been nothing but pleased with it!

I have a jager 200 and 250 heating my 140. Great all around. Both my heaters need calibration both are off on the set temperature after 2 years of use. But they still work great
