Ok.. so this thread is about a Powerhead that i've installed into my 150gallon tank.. it measures is 72" x 20" x 24" so its a 6ft tank... the reason why i added a powerhead is because i have lots of plecos in this tank and i dont like how there isn't much of a current in my tank generated by my two filters.. EHEIM 2234 and AC 110..

Now.. the powerhead that i have is actually a submersion pump... it s a Versa model G210AG20... to make it more clear as to what it looks like.. theres a link.. http://www.wholesalepumps.com/Product.cfm?DID=12&PID=17

The reason why i used this instead of a traditional powerhead is because they are really the same thing.. If you notice aquaclear powerheads.. the design is basically a sealed pump with a jet like effect for the water.. what i'm doing is basically turning it 180degees upside down...

The result were very surprising.. the pump is design to pull water up to 6ft high.. design for any waterfall or pumps in ponds... and what im seeing inside my tank is that its REALLY pushing water...

The question i'm asking is that.. i have Arowana in there.. about 18" and he's not being affected in anyway.. but is enjoying some of the current in the water..

My question is.. good idea or bad idea?

as long as the current isn't stressing out your stock, I see no problem in this. I myself would've added another ac110 and just placed them at opposite ends of the tank. but what you did seems to be utilizing your filtration better and really eliminating dead flow pockets. nice job bro

sounds like the aro just found a new fun home. add a ping pong ball in the tank and he will really have a blast. ( make sure he wont choke on it, he may be to big)

Thanks, ya.. i notice the current is picking up pleco poop quite a bit.. along with other debris from the tank... i do agree that i need another filter.. I'm actually considering an FX5... which i know is perfect.. ;)

Actually ping pong balls dont do anything.. i tried it earlier on with my aro.. and he's still has a drop eye.. and they dont really go after them.. nor do they play.. they will however go after my finger i've notice.. :)

Anyone else??

everything sounds fine except for your choice in pumps... those are the same as the homedepot fountain pumps.. ive never had one last more than a year... harbor freight has one with about the same specs for $25.. ive yet to have one burn out on me..

if you mean the price.. yes.. its an expensive pump..

But believe it or not.. its something i have lying around my house.. it used to belong to my pond outside.. about 1500gallon.. until my dad gave up on it.. Racoons kept coming... and ate up the koi...

And thats why i have this pump lying around.. and since it hasn't been used for years.. i figured might as well...

Although i do agree that these things do burn out.. i've had a smaller one before that had the same problem...
I dont plan to turn this thing on 24/7... just maybe a 3-4 hours a day..

then it should last forever... as long as the fish dont mind it then you should be fine.. however the pump might not be strong enough to really do anything.. ive got a 300-400 gph powerhead in my 100 along with a rio14hf that only has 3' of head and i still have to clean pleco poop atleast once a week..

aim is everything when it comes to pleco poop... also try to train them to only poop in one place insted of leaving trails all over the tank... im always amazed at how a 12" fish can produce a turd 2' long overnight and then make a twin for it while im at work..

That i have to agree... the poop in my tank is giving me a trouble.. . my next step is to invest in a FX-5 and i'm sure that should do the trick.. along with the current filters i have.. sometimes the poop is so thick and long that the filter can't pick them up and end up being stuck between the head..
