I have done everything I can think of to keep my female herotilapia multispinosa from getting destroyed by her mate. She has been in her own cave that he cannot get into for almost a month now. So in the last week he has decided that he will wait until she comes out at feeding time and then he beats her up and won't let her eat. I don't think he understands that she will not breed with him while she is unhealthy and uncomfortable. So this is what I did.

I took her out on Monday and placed her in my 75 gallon with my GT, Sevs, and FM who are all males. At first I thought this was not going to work because she is the only female in an all male tank that usually spells disaster. Well so far she is much happier than she has been since I got her, none of my boys even really acknowledge her. It has been 3 days and so for it's been great.

So here is my master plan.

75 gallon: I will keep my female rainbow in with my boys.

55 gallon: I will move my EBJD & angels into this tank.

29 gallon: I will put my male Rainbow back into the 29 with his school of tetras.

Once my female rainbow heals up I will drop her in the 29 so they can breed, once the fry are big enough I will put her back into the 75. So I basically will drop her into the 29 when ever I want to breed them and then take her back out when they are done.

Does anybody see any problems with this plan?

seems like a plan to me, only problem i could see is that with this method, they would have to re-bond every time you put her back in, but from the sound of it he beats on her anyways so doesnt seem like it would be that much different than it is now and at least then she will have a break in between where she can be happy and not worried about getting beat up, but i think that the 75g will be overstocked when the GTs and sevs are grown (if there is more than 1 sev)

so odd, I have never heard of nor seen an aggressive Rainbow (?) . . . I kept 2 pairs in a 30G, and I used to have as many as 7 Rainbows in a 90G tank, and never had any trouble like you described

one reason she might be okay with the GT, Sev and Firemouth is that Rainbows are so different from them, they might not recognize her as a potential mate . . .

now, if you throw a female convict in there, it's another story . . .

okay, oddball comment: I am listening to classic rock on Pandora, and they are playing the band Rainbow right now . . . :headbang2

I was kind of worried about it being overstocked, but then I thought it probably wouldn't be too bad because shes a female and won't get much bigger than she is now (3").

Oh yeah I do have 2 sevs.

Yeah I had never heard of an aggressive rainbow either until I got this brute. He is an amazing looking fish, very bright orange almost 5" and has beautiful Nuchal hump. He is a total bastard to her though, he has more testosterone than most bulls.
