Hello. I have 8 adult sveni in my 96x30x24, 300 gallon. I started with 8 of them and 8 red back scalare. Although they aren’t bullying the angels I’d say they’re outcompeting them. I’m down to 4 angels. I’m looking for something to replace them. I’d like more of a mid upper level fish that colorful. I’d like to keep them South American. Any thoughts?

Most Geophagus come from fast flowing waters(even rapids)
So combining them with fish like severums, and angels that prefer slower moving water is not an ideal situation.
Tetras and other fish that prefer to live in similar conditions to Geophagus would be better.
The video below has some great info, and talks a little about sveni, toward the end.

Sveni typically do quite well with Heros, various peaceful to moderate acara, taller bodied medium to larger tetras as long as they're not a nippy species, various plecos and catfish and more. 'Surinamesis type' geos and Heros are a common and complementary combination, nearly every geo tank I've done included Heros. Heiko Bleher has frequently suggested Heros and Geophagus as tankmates to other species and under "What fish live with discus?" he says

I always noted the fish species and genera I also netted when taking Discus. I also tried to see far enough underwater to find the real companions of Discus, which are their visitors — and enemies.

The genera and species which live with them most frequently are Pterophyllum scalare and P. leopoldi, Geophagus spp. (pictured above) and Acarichthys heckelii, Satanoperca spp. and Biotodoma spp.

Heros spp was in almost every netting...

To quote Oliver Lucanus from the Geophagus video Duane linked above, "Usually the high bodied species occur along the beaches in the slack water zone." This includes sveni. In fact, I've seen a video of sveni in quiet water along the beach looking for food, and I've seen several wild videos of both Heros and Geos in the same place. Also, research some geo species, for example proximus, and they can also be found in reservoirs, upstream of dams, etc.

True, Heros often live in quiet waters, but as in the Lucanus video below, Heros habitat is diverse and includes rivers with moderate flow. This is evident in some wild footage, including Oliver's video. They're occasionally even found among rapids, though, as Oliver explains, in such places they shelter among rocks.

Thanks for all the input. I think I may try heros curare. Do you have any thoughts on which tetras would thrive?

I've had pretty good success with Red Blue Columbian Tetra and Serpae Tetra with my three full grown H.efasciatus and Red Head Tapajos Geophagus (smaller cousins of Sveni). I'm getting ready to switch to Lemon Tetras in the next month or so as well.

Thanks. I’ll check these out.
