since I was 7, I lived on this stream here in mi. I had never seen caught or herd of a darter in there untill last spring I caught and release a fat female. Today I happened to be walking back ther and low and behold 3-4 darters bounceing around in the current. This creek is also home to some of MI endangered species and they appear to be doing very well. Species such as the northern redbelly dace, southern redbelly dace, silver shinner.

I am VERY HAPPY to see the creek is still going. Construction is massive here in Atlanta. Ponds and lakes are being covered up with soil and construction debris. The water sources are being drastically reduced. The Wildlife Fish & Game Dept. told me when I complained that a water source to a pond was being restricted and it was causing the pond to dry up. They said ma'am we have places drying up all over GA. and nothing can be done. I told him to have someone come out and find out why the source was blocked, he said no. The turtles were starving and trying to eat algae on the edge. They were emaciated and there was still fish in the pond. The turtles were so desperate that wouldn't flee even though we were standing over them. We picked them up and found good homes for them. I wondered why there were so many beautiful turtle shells flattened trying to get across the road, I knew why. Well the pond in question eventually dried up 3 years ago. :(:irked::swear:

Thats tragic, my creek is a designated trout stream so you not even supposed to move a log in there. And if I was to call about a complant the DNR would be there that week.

While checking the creek today I found yet another species that I've never documented as living in this creek. The molted sculpin. Its about 3.5 inchs long and a vary cool looking species.

Thats great news for MI we have alot of endemic fish species in the Ozarks, (Niangua darter, Ozark bass, Ozark madtom etc. , but most of the natives are ignorant to how many are endangered and urban sprawl from springfield,Ozark ,Nixa area and building for tourism in Branson, lakes area is destroying the habitat in several counties. The only way you would know about our endangered species in throught the DNR and they do not have the funds (or many times it seems the inclination) to educate more people about this.

sweet!! good news!! sculpin are awesome!! any pics of the stream and its inhabitants?

Oohhh i see new to this ...this is how i post in the main part ^_^* gets it now*

anyway yay!!!!

i love Sculpins...they are little beasts,
I have a mottled sculpin in a 10 gallon planted/logged/rocky tank, Had him/her about a year now.

I got it from a friend that was out fishing and happen to catch this tiny little beast trying to eat his bate (witch was many times its size) anyway the little fish( about an inch) ended up in the bucket ..and to me!

I would love to have another one when i up grade to a 35gl for it, does anyone know the laws on native fish gathering in Washington state? or could help me find out what they are i would love a second one, or even some other native fish, any help would be great

i love my sculpin ^_^

Go to the NANFA (North American Native Fish Association) website, they have an updated section on each states laws about fish collecting and keeping.
