One tip that I have is to make sure that the room is completely dark and the aquarium's light is the only light source in that room. Oh and also turn the flash on your camera off.

Agreed. I get the best tank pictures when the only light is coming from the tank.

Awesome pics.

Another tip is to make sure your glass is spotless. When doing close ups any small mark or algae on the tank be very visible, even more visible than looking at the tank normally.

It you are using a flash for close up shots (not fts) take them from an angle so the flash does not bounce back off the glass into the camera.

I am no expert what so ever, and will also be keen to learn tips.

I use a DSLR Cannon d500 I think.

Any DSLR will be good (Nikon, cannon, Sony etc) they are all miles better than the point and shoots or camera phones....

Others may chime in (hopefully). I have seen some amazing pics on this site.

Beside clean glass inside and out, and holding the camera at an angle, "not" feeding helps, because any floating particles show up as distracting flecks of light.
I almost always use a flash because my aquarium lights are just not bright enough, and because I shoot mostly during the day, glare can be a problem, I try to use blac backgrounds on tanks. I find Styrofoam insulation painted matte black and taped to the back helps pics, with the added benefit of helping insulate for temp.
I have an old Canon digital Rebel, and take at least 100 shots at a time.
using sunlight

all below with standard flash, and either fluorescent or LED lights above.

below with inexpensive macro ring added, note how easily a little algae shows up
