Hey all,
I have a bare 120 g tank at the moment. I took out all of my black tahitian moon sand (120lbs). I have been keeping piranha's for sometime now. And, I didn't like how the sand darken all of my fish. I also didn't like how it seemed to trap alot of debri. At, each WC I would churn the sand to release any gases and to suck up what I could. The tank would then become cloudy, but once I finished. The debri would finally settle.
Anyway, I recently got the FW stingray bug :nilly:! So, I'm doing my reseach trying to learn as much about them as I can. I plan on buying the book's of how to properly take care of them by Dr. Richard A.Ross.
The company that makes the black tahitian moon sand. Say's to avoid burrowing or bottom dwelling fish, grain size .1-.5 mm.
So, what is a good sand substrate to use with freshwater stingray's? I'm thinking about buying a few bag's of "Estes natural beach sand". Now, there are different color's I could choose from. White would be my second choice but it may show debri easily (like poop) lol.
How many 25 lb bag's do you guy's think would cover the bottom of my tank and be enough for the ray's to hide in? I was thinking 5 bag's would give me 125 lb which should give me a inch deep.

If you do your research, you will find you're going to need a bigger tank.
In an attempt to keep debris in check, I use powerheads to keep it suspended so that the filters can pull it out.
As far as "ray" sand goes, the finer the better. I've found that a quartz based sand can be very fine and still settle back down very quickly when disturbed.

Oh, yea for sure I will need a much larger tank your right. I've been looking at the classifieds, daily. Found a few large tank's at good prices. Just that, the tanks are usually wider than my door way. How is anyone suppose to have a large wide tank fit in the house then? lol
So, when I'm shopping for sand should I look to see if it is quartz based? Isn't pool sand quartz based?
