???
so i picked up a baby black diamond about 4 days ago. i had him in my moms hexagon. probably a 10 gallon or so. hes not scared of me. or when i tap the glass. swims freely. i put him with three small african cichlids. and he killed off one the first night. and took the other twos tails. yesterday i bought a new tank. didnt set it up yet. did a water change. and the filter on my moms hex broke. so i paniced and threw him in the brand new tank. i put some of the old water and the old filter pad in the new filter and he seems fine. ate about 6 guppies so far and killed another african cichlid. does this mean this tank change and two water changes didnt phase him? he seems fine but who knows. would like some input from more experienced rhom keeprs.

It didn't seem to phase my rhomb when I moved him from 29 gal to 55 gal. I just dump the water from the 29 into the 55 filled it up and ran the filter that was on the 29.

im runnin a whole new filter tho. well if hes good i guess hes good. just dont want him crapping out in like 2 days cause of some unknown

as long as you are using the old filter media you'll be fine. the most important in the filter for bio-filtration is the beneficial bacterias in your bio media. just hope that you used water conditioner to remove chlorine (other wise the chlorine will kill off all the beneficial bacterias once it enters the filter media), or the water is at least aged for over night.
as for water change, try not to do more than 50% during each water change, usually about 25-30% per week will be fine. you can either do that amount once a week or you can do small water change through out the week to get a 100% water change if you want. to large of a water change at once can throw off the water parameter and fluctuate the water temperature too much and put stress on the fish.
you can start to get your little rhom off live food now, it'll be easier if you start converting it sooner, other wise it'll be more difficult later down the road. if you do decide to go feed live all the way then try to stay away from feeder gold fish, best will be breeding your own such as mollies, guppies, convict cichlids, etc.
best of luck and post up some pictures :)

oh, forgot to ask, what size tank you have it in now and what filtration are you running?

i have him in a 20 long right now. with a penguin 150 for filtration. right now im feeding him baby guppies and ghost shrimp. but i would like to get him on a cleaner source of foods. what would be a good choice of food? market shrimp and talapia? also. my rhom is always moving its fins rapidly even when not moving. is that ok?

i respectfully disagree with what was said about 50% water changes (or larger) theres nothing wrong with them match up the temps as best you can (+/- a degree ) and change away assuming you haven't tamepered with the water chemistry in the tank any (and you shouldn't) the water pH in the tank will be the same as the pH out of the tap and no fluctuation will occur

but yes we need pics lol

about the fins moving ive seen my RBP do it sometimes and i think its because theres a current in that spot and there trying to keep themselves in one spot

I thought they were a schooling fish? no? Can you really keep just one or will it stress out?

rhoms are solitary fish i believe.

rhoms are solitary keeping one wont stress it out neither will it have any long term health risks to RBP's and the like if they are kept singly but i can say for sure that they will become more out going and less shy sooner if in a nice sized group but its perfectly fine to keep ANY piranha singly

Consider me "learned", I had thought all piranha were schoolers.
