I'm a newb to Pbass and I attempted to keep a couple before but they got lockjaw and died so I'm looking to try again for real this time lol Can anyone recommend me a good starter peacock bass species that won't be too small and won't break the bank. I'm not looking for a size limit just as long as they don't stay too small and also how many is a good amount to start with they will eventually go into an indoor pond about 1,000 gallons or a little less

Juvenile Cichla may need extra attention. I never had any problems raising juveniles as long as they were in groups of 2 or more. I am not an expert per say, but p. bass above 5-6" are usually easier to take care of. I started with Ocellaris, Mono, Tems, Azul and now Kelberis. Most cichla are not food-picky. You may want to stay away from juveniles p.bass if you are afraid of any risk factor, however, it may be hard for you to find 5-6"+ at a "good" price. My suggestion for you would be to buy from one of the better p.bass "connoisseur" on MFK or a reputable LFS/ online seller.

Ocellaris cichla are the cheaper p.bass I believe.
I personally like Kelberis the most for their sizes and colors. Tems wouldn't leave any food to other fish and can grow pretty big. It's really up to you which cichla you like the most (research, research, research...) and how much you are willing to spend (consider food investment as well, cichlas eat a lot). I bought my 2 juveniles Kelbs a few months back for $150 at my LFS. I don't know how reputable petsolutions is, but they have some for $50 a piece. http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Freshwater-Fish-Plants/I/Kelberi-Tocantins.aspx

I suggest you start with Orinos. They are not a very expensive variety but will not be second to any other cichla, looks wise, when they grow up. From what I've read keeping good water quality is most important thing. Be prepared to do lots of water changes when they are young.

How come peacock bass are so expensive like in the $200$ That's outrageous haha there are some hard core p bass fans
