Ive kept one piranha in the past,it was a red belly. It was around 8 inches long.I later got rid of it because i really honestly dident like the fact it almost jumped out the water when i came close to the tank.do any of you know what would be a good intresting piranha, for starting off in a 30 gallon.I would get a rhom but they grow to slow.

The answer is simple, old sport. Your red bellied piranha was very shy and skittish because it was kept alone. Red bellied piranhas must be kept in schools of at least 6.

I'm not quite sure if a 30 gallon will suffice for any piranha. Rhoms also need a much bigger tank. At any rate, good luck!

Much of this is Very True . Most piranha/Characins are starter fish !!
But If you do not research you may become disappointed with the behavior of
the piranha . :D Hope this helps you in the right direction . .

To answer more direct , Pygo piranha are skiddish , Serra are less likely to be
skiddish . BUT GROW SLOW . You are poking around and figuring it out Eahh ~!
I did the same thing and went for it PIRANHA . Im glad I did .

S. Marginatus or S. Irritans would do well in a 30 tank by themselfs for a while, however they are somewhat rare and could be somewhat costly also eventually you might need a bigger tank to make the fish more comfortable. My rhom grew relativly fast from around 2 inchs to 5-5.5 where it is now but i think after 5 or 6 inchs they grow slow.

definately not a rhom, i think you might be able to do a sanchezi, prolly for life but i wouldnt recomend it, they get like 8 inches

Possibly a spiro, or if you don't mind a false piranha go with Catoprion mento (Wimple piranha) these are atractive fish that are a good size for a 30g.

I'd say a Serrasalmus Sanchezi. It would be a good starter specimen and could probably stay in a 30g for life.

And NO red bellies do not need to be kept in "schools" of 6. I have a solo red that is more aggressive than most serras.

You guys have some great thoughts, but to tell you the truth large_cichlids(sry don't know your name). I personally will hold off on your desires until you get yourself a minimum of a 55 gallon tank. As one said the samllest fishes that are out there are hard to find and could be expensive. Now what you have to do is look into piranhas that live in solitude. The sanchezi and the mento that other memebers have mentioned are your best bet if you REALLY want a piranha. Yet again the mento hasn't been classified as a piranha yet, but I think it well in the future(issues with its teeth structure), anyways these two fishes are grazers/ambush predators, so you would buy one of them, and u also would need a host for either the sanchezi or the mento to graze on. GL.

wait till you get a 75 gallon + and go with either a nice pygo shoal of 3+ or a nice serra. imo a 75 gallon tank is the smallest you want to go.
