I was wondering what you guys used for substrate? I am interested in trying to create more of a muddy look, as most of the lakes and ponds around me are more muddy than sandy or rocky. But I figured that could get messy.

Anyone have any suggestions for how to accomplish this look. I don't really like gravel, and I HATE white sand, unless in a reef tank. I am most interested in a dark brown or black.

I was thinking of trying topsoil, but not sure how that would work. I know it would have to be unfertilized.

Top soil might be ok. Biggest issue would be it getting stirred up easily and clogging filters. Water clarity would probably be an issue as well, since you probably want to see the fish. ;) As long as there are no organic elements to it or fertilizers there shouldn't be any issues using it chemically though.

Might just go with some black sand. I got the Tahitian Moon stuff and it works well.

Might look into some of the prepackaged planted tank substrates. The ones at the shops near me are darker colored. Not exactly positive what they are made of though, I haven't used them yet myself. Considering their intended use though, I'm sure they present a natural appearance.
