Goonch catfish ID

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most sold these days are “sp. indochina” going under the name b. Yarelli… unless the seller has a collection point or origin its pretty hard to tell. Good news is these “new” sp. indochina are more tolerant of typical warmer water tanks than the b. Bagarius available yrs. ago. Id go with sp. indochina or yarelli.

Ok thank, that really helps

The classification of Goonch is in my opinion now even more confusing than it ever was and I believe not helped with some of the id pictures on planetcatfish being of the wrong fish. That said, the only real thing you need to know is, dwarf, highland or lowland. Ie dwarf, cool water or warm water.
The rest of the requirements are pretty much the same.
To the old classification
Figure out if yours has round eyes or oval .
Round will mean Yarelli or bagarius
Oval will be rutilus or indochina.
It’s not the dwarf.

D Devilcat1970 Just saw that same fish/picture scanning my usual “supplier pages” ? understand y ur asking now lol… if ur “in the market” for one id go with the 7” B. lica for $200 available from wes at rare fish ?. Might snag one from there myself. IMO the lica are the best looking aside from the true highland giants bagarius bagarius. He just put the list up on here today. Rest assured they will be “correct” from him also.
