Gordo Spotted Raphael Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my spotted looks like a golfball with fins but my striped looks fine
My finned golf ball is striped. Lol looks like I need to get a spotted that’s skinny just so I can balance out the scale a bit.

On a more serious note, is it an issue if they are so huge. I have been limiting its food as much as possible but it is prowling almost immediately as food hits the surface of the water. Most responsive catfish I have ever seen

You speak Spanish, Jason? The only reason I know is that a friend of ours has a dog nicknamed Gordo and she explained what it means.

That's about typical.

Raphs are feed hogs, both kinds, but perhaps spotted ones are often rounder. Short term it seems doesn't affect their health. But long term, I wonder... Too few people are able to keep any fish long term, myself included.

If someone really wanted to know, they'd need to comb MFK, Planet Catfish, and other forums, YouTube, FB, etc... for info on the longest-lived raphs and check out their tummy and see whether there is any correlation.

My wife teaches me :) He just goes around eating the left overs, he takes a whole shrimp and takes it back to the pleco cave and munches on it, then comes back for more. I toss in sinking pellets and he just eats and eats and eats.

Mine isn't swollen at all, is that normal?

Also what do you feed it?

Welcome to the MFK!

I think if your fish feeds fine, you'd have nothing to worry about.

But details may matter - how long you have had yours, how old it is / what size it is, what you feed it and how much, what your water parameters are and how they are measured, what the tank mates are, is the fish being bullied, is there an adequate hide, lighting, aeration, perhaps a photo may be included, etc. All these can affect how a fish feeds.

Perhaps you offer yours a very different diet quality- or quantity-wise, or your fish doesn't get a chance to overfeed, as it often does in the hands of others because it is hard to avoid in most communities.
