About a week ago, I brought home a 6-month-old Rhacodactylus leachianus gecko. I'd been interested in getting one for a while, and to my pleasant surprise I found out that a very good breeder lived only 15 minutes from me! She's a probable female and weighs 18g. She's on a diet of Repashy's CGD, and I'll add occasional bug feeders once she is old enough to handle them.

I'm totally fascinated with the Rhacodactylus geckos. I'm currently petsitting for my friend's two juvie crested geckos, and they're fun but (like my girl) hard to spot most of the time. I've heard that R. auriculatus (the gargoyle gecko) and R. chahoua (the "chewie" gecko) are more likely to be seen out and about during the day, and that both may even bask during the daytime! I'd love to pick up a chahoua, and I find their fully prehensile tails to be mesmerizing. Dang their hefty pricetag, though! I wonder if I could get just as much enjoyment out of a gargoyle or crested.

If anyone would like to share their experiences with the Rhacs, I'd love to hear them. I'm sort of obsessed with them all right now. :)

Here's a picture of my girl, "Hilda"

And for those who aren't familiar with leachianus, here is what an adult "island morph" looks like:

The "mainland" or "Green Terre" morphs grow even larger, and in general, are found to be more aggressive. I hope that my girl will remain handleable as she grows up. She was not happy when I got her picture tonight. Leachies are very vocal, and she was clicking and burping the whole time.

I have been into herps for 20+ years and am not familiar with those. I have mostly been into snakes and monitors tho.

Very nice. I love leachies.

Yeah they're relatively rare in the pet trade. I went to a pretty large Repti-Con a few months ago, and only one vendor had leachies (and just a few for sale).

Awesome pick-up!

Thank you! I'm really happy with her.

Nice purchase! I've always been a big fan of the Pine Isle and Grand Terre morphs.

Thanks, and I agree! I think the Pine Island morph is especially pretty, b/c the individuals are larger and the shade of green on them is always so pretty. PI seems a little harder to find, and I wanted to avoid GT because of the higher risk for aggression. I'd still like to see a full-grown GT in person. I bet they are so impressive!

My girl is a Nuu Ana x Nu Ami cross.

Very nice. I love leachies.

Thank you, I do too! :)

Awesome gecko! I'm hoping to get a crestie or two fairly soon, but I really hope to someday get a leachie

I picked up a 3-year-old adult Chahoua at yesterday's Repti-Con. :D The breeder brought him so that I could see what one looked like and, yeah, I was smitten. He is so freaking cool. Pretty tame, eating like a pig already, and settling in quite well.

In my mind, Chahoua possess a wonderful combination of qualities. Although they are smaller than leachies, they have a similar look. They have a long prehensile tail. They have the ability to camouflage (you'll notice how hard it is to see my guy in the 4th picture below). They eat both the liquid CGD diet and also love stalking for bugs. Although they are nocturnal, they will bask under a light source during the daytime. They do have a requirement for particularly high humidity, so that's really the only parameter you need to be very diligent about. Otherwise their care is similar to the other Rhacs. Really amazing geckos.
