About a week ago, I brought home a 6-month-old Rhacodactylus leachianus gecko. I'd been interested in getting one for a while, and to my pleasant surprise I found out that a very good breeder lived only 15 minutes from me! She's a probable female and weighs 18g. She's on a diet of Repashy's CGD, and I'll add occasional bug feeders once she is old enough to handle them.
I'm totally fascinated with the Rhacodactylus geckos. I'm currently petsitting for my friend's two juvie crested geckos, and they're fun but (like my girl) hard to spot most of the time. I've heard that R. auriculatus (the gargoyle gecko) and R. chahoua (the "chewie" gecko) are more likely to be seen out and about during the day, and that both may even bask during the daytime! I'd love to pick up a chahoua, and I find their fully prehensile tails to be mesmerizing. Dang their hefty pricetag, though! I wonder if I could get just as much enjoyment out of a gargoyle or crested.
If anyone would like to share their experiences with the Rhacs, I'd love to hear them. I'm sort of obsessed with them all right now.
Here's a picture of my girl, "Hilda"
And for those who aren't familiar with leachianus, here is what an adult "island morph" looks like:
The "mainland" or "Green Terre" morphs grow even larger, and in general, are found to be more aggressive. I hope that my girl will remain handleable as she grows up. She was not happy when I got her picture tonight. Leachies are very vocal, and she was clicking and burping the whole time.
