Coming here for advice and Questions!

First, I havnt set it up yet so i was wondering how long i should cycle it for?
also what kinda fish can i do? i always wanted an oscar!

Cycling can take up to a year in some cases. You can use special bacteria to speed this process up. Ask your LFS, they almost always sell it. If you ask me an oscar would be fine in a 55, though it may become tough for him to turn as he gets bigger.

i see tons of videos on youtube of full grown oscars in 55 and they look alright? i thought you can just let the tank run for a few weeks and then it will be ready for fish.

an oscar will be fine in a 55, you can also add some tank mates with good filtration, oscars are very messy.
what kind of filter are you running?

i cycled my 55 in a week with used filters and i filled the tank 1/4 way with water from already established tank

to be honest, i dont ever cycle. i just set the tank up. buy some cheap fish and let them dirty it up for a day or 2 and then i add some aggressive fish to eat them. and they live forever! right now i have a baby oscar a blood parrot and a firemouth! and all is well.

lol you too!

thats because oscars are hearty fish. try that with a discus or something fragile and it won't be such a fantastic outcome... i learn from expirience...

If you want to keep an Oscar, cycling isn't as big of a deal...one week with some minnos and toss in an Oscar. Minnows become food and you end up with one Oscar in a 55g...just the way you want it. :D

just cycle the tank with some cheap fish... feeders or danios or something. like 6 of them.

after a week or two add the oscar. oscars are not wimps, hell you could probably just put an oscar in from the get go and change the water a lot and it would be fine. Gonna have to change teh water a lot anyway with an oscar
