Hi all.

Got a pair of a small-sized Dormitator, but I'm not sure about the species. These are caught in the Cocó River, Ceará State, NE Brazil. It attains a maximum size of about 4 inches, and these specimens were 2-inches long when I got these pics. They're amost 3 inches now, the female being somewhat smaller. Any thoughts?

Oh, Guppy... I believe it's the same species of that juvie I posted dome time ago. Would it be Dormitator lophocephalus? :naughty:

Best regards.

Daniel.

So these are Brazilian? I still can't find a picture of the D. lophocephalus but that puts them at the right size. They look a bit like the lebretonis but there are no reports of them or the pleurops outside of Africa. I can find no pics of the D. cubanus but you are way south of them. The latifrons is only found on the Pacific coast.
That leaves just the lophocephalus and the maculatus. The maculatus lacks the spot behind the gill cover and looks very different than that when around 2-4", here is a pic of one that size.
Try sending some pics to the Icthyology dept. (taxonomist) at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., include size and origin, that series you posted above is great, it shows color, pattern and ray shapes and numbers well enough to get a good count on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins.

It would be very cool if they were a southern population of the lophocephalus

yeah, are you sure they're Brazilian fish??
Yep... These are VERY common here. In fact, this pair was caught by some friends, and they escaped the destiny of their "catch-mates". They were given as LIVE FOOD for a Clarias. The collectors told me they released the fat females full of ova, BTW, and I got this pair for FREE. So, I'm pretty sure they're brazilian AND locally collected.:grinyes:

Guppy,

Any email or specific scientist you reccomend? These pics of the juvie I tried to send to Fishbase, but the email given didn't work out. :grinno:
I'll try to get a side pic of the female too. :naughty:

Best regards.

Daniel.

Here is a link to the appropriate page of the Smithsonion Museum of Natural History, Vertebrate Zoology Dept., http://www.nmnh.si.edu/vert/fishes/fishstaff/staff.html#technical
I think the one you want is the woman in the lower right corner,
Ms. Marilyn Weitzman,
she specializes in South American freshwater fish and would at least be able to point you to the right person.
