I recently got my hands on an old aquarium canopy. It was partially painted, is missing the door at the front that opens and closes, and doesn't have any lights. It has some fans inside, but they look really beat up. One of the fans has a cover that is really rusty. there are wires connected to the fans, and the wires come out and have no plug on the end... So, I have a few questions...

Are these fans really needed?
What type of lighting would i put in this?
How do I do the electrical in this thing?
IS it possible to just toss this on top of a regular aquarium hood?

Do you think its worth it to get this thing fixed up? I would enjoy having a canopy on my aquarium.

Do you have any pics that you can post, it would really help in seeing if it's worth fixing up-also how handy and good with tools are you? The fans are there to vent the warm air from lighting out. Without seeing any pics I can only guess, but you should be able to mount any lights you want that will fit depthwise. The fans are probably the type to be used in performance computer cases and if that's the case you'll need a transformer that will change your 110V AC down to either a 5V or 12V DC supply(depending on the fans requirement). The wiring should be easy to do as long as you're comfortable in your ability to do it properly.
