Well today I was bitten for the first AND second time by my 10 inch spotted gar while handfeeding live feeders(in preperation for silversides starting next week.) The florida gar is much calmer and politely took them from my fingers though lol... is there a certain way to hold the fish so as to reduce the risk of being bitten?

Dont hand feed

Why are you holding the fish while feeding? I am having trouble even imagining how that works. Just put the food in.

As I just said in another thread, hand feeding associates your hand with food. Soon you won't need to be holding a feeder to get bitten. :)

I want them to associate my hand with food so I can feed them food thats better for them... then Ill just drop them in when they see my hand over the water

I think the association of you coming up to the tank and then recieving food is good enough, the gars see a lot more than just the hand when they get fed. although you could probably try a rubber dish glove, maybe a particular color so that theres an association with color.

not if they are only accepting feeders...
yes they will. Mine associate me with food. Its not hard to convert them to frozen and hand feeding is just dangerous to you AND your gar. Associating your hand with food will make tank maintenance a major pain in the butt
