Never thought this would happen to me. But I was able to pick up two 9" along with two 6" of same age(5) in a 55 gallon. The tank also came with me too.

Just curious on how often or available this is for hobbyist in here. Share your story please. Big clowns 7" and up are not common to see even at the pet stores. Seems as they have been with private owners for many years.

Mine are about 5-6" and will never get rid of them. They are ina group of 4. Ive seen them around 7-8" goin' for $80. Keep 'em and keep em healthy. I think thats why you dont see them being sold that large because hobbyists love these guys so much they just wont part with them no matter how large they get.

Here are some of my recent:

* 2 9" and 2 6" were in a 55 gallon one owner for 5 years. Just a mom and pop keeper.
* A set of clown loaches housed in a dance club/restaurant for 4 years. About 5 ranging from 5"-7".
* A LFS in my area brought in 5-7 wild caught 8"+ for $150 each. But were the skinniest ugly ones I have ever seen. (Did not get any from this)
* While on vacation in Anaheim, CA. 8" loach with asking price of $130. (Did not buy this one)
* A fellow north of me had what he claimed 2 9.5" Clowns on Craigslist ad 3.5 hours north of me. Believe they were 9 years old. Wanted $200 for both and were on the thin side. Too far of a drive for me.

One is a super phatty and other is a more torpedo bodied, but still bulky. Once again, they have been together for 5 years in a 55 from previous owner.

Nice score!

I recently picked up some pretty decent sized clowns ( a 10-11" and four smaller ones) for a good price (all of them for under $100 total). I had a chance earlier this summer to grab another 10" for $200 but I'm on a low budget. 6"-7" seem about max around here that are offered semi-regularly through private sales.

I had the good fortune of picking up seven clowns from a local hobbyist on Friday. One 9", one 7", two 6.5", two 5.5"/6", and the smallest at 5". The biggest is also a fatty and we're calling her Gammy. All of these were had for less than $200.

Very likely to also be picking up two other big ones from a friend later this week (one 9" and one 11"). That'll bring my shoal up to 24!

Cool..!!! It's nice to see other peeps obtaining large clowns or even the opportunity to grow them out themselves at any size. Just know and remind yourself that big clowns have seen a lot and been through several tanks (or many). So, gotta appreciate them more so than just their usual pricey price tag. Happy clown hunting all and good luck!
