Very much south..
and a couple of muds and one humongous Staurotypus Salvinii in the Barcelona Expoterraria fair.:)

The softshells are one baby Florida Softie ( Apalone Ferox ) and a baby Spiny...

could some of you guys give me the highlights of the differences between the two species? I would love to hear beyond whatever's in the net, counting on your "hands on " expertise....please:)

Its very easy Miguel, baby spineys are generaly of a yellowisch color whit some black stripes on the head and legs and somethimes large deep yellow spots on the back.the back also has small spicky protuberances hence the name spiney. Baby floridas are all black whit darker spots on the back and beatifull yellow stripes on head and legs. the back is smodd:D Great pickups. Im in the process of getting a 1,2 adult group of floridas also. Great turts and I was really missing having some. I at the moment I also have a young male chinese softy wich is doing great. Dont forget one of the golden rules when it comes to softys Miguel. Dont feed them large peaces of meat or fish. I know Im reapiting myself and that is ironic considering that they are great predators but somehow they seem unable to take large solid meals and babys can literaly eat themselfes to death. I recomend that you do what´s worked for me best. Start those baby on defrosted fish food and Reptomin and then gradualy ad more stuff. But allways is bether to give them several small meals than one large. Im kind of traumatized whit this because I once lost a beautifull pair of chinese softys including a huje male. All I did was trow in a sardine for them to eat something I have made thousands of times whit this and other turts. Only to came home a few hours later and find both dead:(. I then suerd myself that I ll not let that happen ever again. But then the story had a sort of happy ending because that pair produced many babys in its life time:)

thank You Coura. As a matter of fact the Florida one ( apalone ferox ) is the one with the orange markings on the shell. The spiny ( apalone spiniferus )is olive coloured with black dots on the carapace and yes, the yellow stripes in the snout...

were you in Barcelona?

But what I need to know is their diference in temperament...is it true that Floridas are serial killers?

No I wasnt in Barcelona(:wall::wall::wall:) By some reason I allways want to go and somehow endup not going :grinno:. But anyway yes there is a great deal of variacion between individuals. Oh and dont waist your time trying to indentify the subs your spiney belongs, most are simply crosses betwen western ones and something else. Floridas, at least on my experience, are very similar to spineys in behavior. All the Apalone species are "more or less social" ,and unlike Pelodiscus the chinese softies wich are so agresive that you must keep them individualy, whit this species you can generaly combine several provided that they are the same size and the habitat is large and has several decoracions to break the view. Ive keept this way my florida,a spiney and a few muticas. Dont combine however males. Oh and keep your new turts on a closer eye for fungus wich they are very prone to.

I just caught one yesterday at about 3". He living out in my pond eating rosie reds and koi tail
