Well me and my GF broke down and got a little 3 inch silver arowana. Expensive little bugger. Got him/her (not sure how to tell the sex as of yet) in a 40Gal breeder for now. Its eating through at least 5-6 guppies a day, not to mention some crickets that were feeding on some power crusted carrots for protein boost. Plan on doing about 25-50% water change weekly. Is there anything so far as what we are doing that can be improved on or something we aren't doing?

How well do they take to plants and substrate? Is rock or sand preferred? Live or plastic plants etc.

Just lookin for some of you guys' experiences.

i would suggest you to get him on bloodworms at first it is better to add live plants as my arrowana too feels secured in it especially of that size along with some plznts at the surface

Secure top, no holes these guys have a knack for jumping out of the tank. Best to get it onto a quality pellet, blood worms are usually eagerly accepted. Floating plants will make the aro feel more secure also.

I have some plastic floating plants set up for him/her to hide and added some black rock substrate to him. Some 3 small albino cory's in there as well to keep the left over food at a minimum. BTW the black rock greatly accentuates the colors on him. Hes a bit pinkish/orange from top of the head to the back of the dorsal fin and a bit down the sides and the rest of him is silvery. It really is a gorgeous fish.

For the bloodworms he doesn't seem to be interested in them unless they are live. Live brine, live crickets, stunned/live guppies, are live bloodworms accessible at say Petsmart or similar?

Would it be advisable to get a farlowella?

silver aro's don't care about the substrate actually, they are top dwellers. Don't indulge him/her in a feeder menu if you don't want him/her to get drop eye.

I have two babies, one silver and one black. They pretty much eat anything, I kinda like to mix it up a bit, they both eat minnows, crickets, guppies, as well as frozen blood worms, freeze dried shrimp and Arowana pellets I crush to be small enough for them.

I stray away from live feeders unless I quarentine them for at least 3 weeks(which I stray away). Just ended my breeding feeders lil episode, so thats a no no. But my jardini loves bloodworms, shrimp, and tilapia. Today I broke down and bought a $30 bag of massivore sinking pellets for my bichirs. I'll let you know how that goes with the jardini.

I tried a silver/jar combo... End of story(don't worry he didn't die:D)... But while I had the 4 incher he attacked bloodworms and freeze dried krill like he hadn't ate since he was born. They were a smaller krill which I have never been able to find any that small ever since. I think I got lucky and just grabbed a bottle that happened to have the smaller ones in it.
