NEW YORK
Hey Guys,

So after being scammed for $40 on some fish on this site, I went to the LFS with my dad as my dad knows the owner and they have 200+ tanks full of salt and freshwater fish. I bought two bolivian rams which I am hoping to be a pair. I have a divider in my tank one side being for the rams and the other being for the livebearing fish. In the Ram part of the tank I have 3 pieces of slate and some plants, in the live bearer portion of the tank I have about 7 plants. And if you're wondering I have 13 Platies,1 molly and a female Betta. I have a 5.5gal that I will use for any fry as a grow out tank and I have space for 1-2 10gal tanks if necessary for fry. Check of my blog here I'm not sure how to upload pictures directly to here, so just go on the blog to see them.

Thanks,
Matt

nice setup, really clean........Looks like you took a picture of those tanks from the PetSmart fish department(thats how clean your tank look)..............Being a cichlid owner, I would suggest getting rid of the livebearers and sticking with the 55g gallon to be a starter breeder about cichlids................The Bolivian Rams are cool, but try a pair of COnvict Cichlids..............These fish are easy to breed up to three times per month..........Breeding these fish will produce enough fry to feed the larger fish every month......................A spawn will contain at least 50 fry and up to 200-300...............

I have a Convict actually in my 5.5gal. Just one Juvi. So are you saying breed the convicts and use the fry as food to feed the other chichlids? Interesting idea there. I like the livebearers though and I just got them. I think I'm going to hold on to them for 2-3months and sell tham as well as there fry and ,maybe bring in enough money to swing some nice faith and maybe another tank or two?

Looks really neat, the part that said you bought two bolivian rams, do you know if they male or female, If it helps the one in the picture is female. Now, that being said I did the same thing a year or two ago, bought two opposite sex rams and had to get them to pair, which was harder then it seems. Obviosly the best way is to get a pair is to get a group of them and let two pair off that way. However, that has not been done so it won't be as easy. Anyways some tricks that I've used. The first thing is I did is when ever one, female or male, would become agressive I simply would take them in the net lift out of water and place back it. Obviosly not watching them 24/7 and stressing them to death, but you know, it nstresses them and then it goes to the other and eventually forms a pair for protection. Another option is add the smaller of the two, female or male, into the tank to establish a territory and then add the other. What I did that had the best results is I added a fish that seemed to be a threat but actually wasn't. I used a 7 inch senegal bichir, Ive heard others use a large flying fox or some other sort. For this they group together for protection and eventually pair. Oh and also your rams look too small to be bread, but I may be wrong and they just are stressed. Goodluck.

I'm 99% sure that they are male and female. From what I have heard these grow to 2-3" mine are defiantly adult size. I am thinking they are already a pair, and the owner of the fish store who is my dad's friend said he thinks they are one as well. They have been a little more active since I added them to them tank. How do I know if they are a pair? I just got them today so hopefully they become more active and their colors come out better.
