While I was cleaning it in the bucket it the water looked really dirt and I rinsed it at least five time and the water was still a little dirty looking but not near as bad. Is that normal? The filter sand is a dark tan color.

pool filter sand should be white... iunno who sold you a tan colour sand my pf sand was good after 2 rinses then it made the water a little murky at first when dropped into the tank but settled withing a few hours

I bought it from a pool store and it was 50lbs for $9. It said pool filter sand on the bag.

Mine washed clear in 2-3 washs. But different brands are going to be different colors and the dust is going to be different. Id just keep washing till it comes clean

Am I the only one that finds it funny that we clean sand

The sand I get from the pool place is white, 16 bucks for 50lbs and I pour it right in and tank is clear in 15 minutes

I got mine from Leslie's pool supply (they are a chain so they should be all over) It was $12 for 50 lbs. Sand rinsed great in a 5 gal bucket. I did it in 2 batches. Just pushed the garden hose around in the sand while the bucket was tilted. All of the dust and fine particles wash right out. Give it a few minutes and you 'll know when it's done. It will go from murky to cloudy to clear. Total of maybe a half hour from the trunk of my car to the bottom of the tank. Tank was a little hazy for an hour or so after putting it in.
Just remember to keep the filter off when adding the sand and until the particles settle in the tank.

Heres a pic
