As title states, ripped out the Fluval 406 tonight; after repeated frustration with low flow and priming annoyances.

Add that to the water spillage when doing maintenance on it, which is unavoidable when the pipes are lifted; and it makes for a messy experience each time.

I don't know if all canisters are like this, but I can definitely say I'll be avoiding for the foreseeable future.

Ironically, i've replaced with two Fluval internal U4's that I've had for years, they are solid filters.

Comments welcome

I'm not familiar with fluval canisters but why not put them in a tray to catch any spills? I use Rena xp4, xp3, and cfs 500 canisters and I guess I'm just blessed because the only issue that I've had was the valves leaking on the cfs after 5 years.

I agree, can't stand the 406. It just didn't feel like a solid canister compared to a 2217. I don't have the fluval in use anymore, I feel like an ac110 would be a better. I think canisters in general are going to leak, the eheim disconnects are easier because you can run them into a bucket with ease, but the flip top model of the 406 is awful.

I had my canister underneath my tank, so when reaching in to disconnect; the water would quite literally go sideways all over the place; even over the edge of the bucket :(

I'm just gonna sell the 406, I have a 206 that will also be sold; I hear a lot of great reviews on the AC110 from across the pond, unfortunately the tank rim i have doesnt allow for one; and also the tank is very close to the wall.

I agree that potential leaking has always been a worry of mine too, right now the two internals look ugly; but it's a fair trade off to avoiding potentially coming home to my own living room swimming pool lol.
