Hey guys. After looking into getting a carpet plant, I decided to go out and get some dwarf hairgrass. I bought three pots of the stuff. My only concern is that it is a little taller than I expected. Is it really dwarf hairgrass? Am I supposed to trim it? I want to try planting it tonight. I hear the best way is to seperate it into small bunches and push them gently into the sand. Here is a picture:

Hard to tell with out something to gauge the size with. It appears to be hairgrass, not dwarf hairgrass.

well from what i read about them they get half a foot...so 5-6" is going to be natural, but you can always trim them to your specific needs. I would get a couple strands of hairgrass and spread them everywhere in your tank floor to maximize your carpet needs...lol im not sure if it best to do it that way but im just saying from what many places on the internet are saying =] sweet plant

My hairgrass gets about 3-4" hight and I just cut it back. Can be a real pain with all the little pieces floating around the tank though. It's good to see you are planting it in a sand substrate which makes it so much easier. Break it up and spread it around. The smaller the clumps, the faster it will spread out. Individually is the best method but takes forever. I don't know what lighting you have but it does take a fair amount of light to grow. Be patient because it will take a while before it looks like it is doing anything.

Hairgrass height seems to be determined by light conditions.

In our tank that runs with a 70w 6500k Metal Halide, Co2 and ferts it gets about 5 - 6 inches tall.

In our tank with a couple of 15w T8 tubes, no Co2 or ferts, it only grows about 2 inches tall.
