So, I recently posted the thread about choosing a puffer for a 20 gallon tank, and concluded that dwarf puffers would be best... problem is my lfs has no dwarf puffers for now. I figured I would just start a new topic on this...

After no less than 3 phone calls to my LFS and a lot of research, i've found out they have 2 pretty unusual species (this is a huge independent store that carries a lot of rare species regularly)...

Carinotetraodon salivator

http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Freshwater/C_salivator/

and

Carinotetraodon irrubesco.
http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Freshwater/C_Irrubesco/

Does anyone have any experience with these? The salivator's are $30 each, don't want to take a chance on them without lots of research. They have males and females.

They also have the following:

Common Puffer

Abei Puffer
http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Freshwater/T_abei/

Palembang Puffer

Opinions? TELL ME!

People who I know that have had salivators have really enjoyed them..and they are rare

You cannot be sure what that common puffer is with out a photo ID, I know it says Cutcutica...but that is questionable at best..we need pictures!

The Palembang is Really in-active

They were calling them emerald puffers actually. Pretty sure that link is to the correct species, as I saw them yesterday and they look very close to the picture from what I can remember.

The Carinotetraodon salivator is definitely a rarely seen puffer (at least over here), and are a good mid sized puffer which is active...

Carinotetraodon irrubesco are a bit more common and not quite as big as the salivator if i remember correctly...

Tetraodon cutcutia as the name states quite common, and imo the colors/pattern bores me, but thats just me...

Monotrete Abei another slightly rare puffer with great markings and nice and active...

Monotrete Palembangensis, stay away from this one since its going to need a much larger tank than a 20G, plus they are extreme lurkers... my two basically never move, the male even more so than the female which will still at least some what react when i walk near the tank...

But in all honesty, your best bet is to see which puffer you personally like best... no point going after the rarest puffer just coz its rare, since at the end of the day your the one who has to enjoy the puffer and if you don't enjoy it then not much point keeping it...

I'm not going after the rarest... I just have a list of the puffers available and some of them happen to be rare. I want the best fit for me, so I want peoples input on their impressions and experiences with the species I have listed.

I would go with the Abei. Nice size and active hunter. I prefer hunters over lurkers. Although the Salivators look really nice, could go for a pair in a 20 gal.

Out of that list i've personally kept C.irrubesco's, T.cutcutia & M.Palembangensis...

From experience you MAY be able to keep two C.irrubesco's together in a densely planted tank if your lucky as they are quite active hunters... the Palembangs as i mentioned in my past post will not really work in the 20G as they can get quite big + they are extreme lurkers that don't do anything which is not something that a lot of people like / enjoy...

The T.cutcutia are quite active but as i mentioned before i just didn't really like the colors much and gave them away to an LFS to sell as i rescued them from a friend of mine who also didn't want them...

As for the Salivator pair, its going to be really touch and go as they are a very aggressive species of puffer, almost more so than the C.irrubesco's from what i've seen in the past, plus as mentioned they also get bigger than irrubesco's which is why i don't think it would be a good idea keeping them in a 20G coz once they mature theres good chance they may kill each other...

If I were you, I'd go over there with a camera & post pics for a good ID. Unless you really don't care what the true species are & you just pick out the one you like. I just don't trust the ID of any shop/supplier.
