A story circulating in Japan involves what has been described as a “miracle goldfish,” because the tiny fish was tossed into an aquarium display tank seven years ago, as food for larger fish, but ended up hiding in a filtration tank and went unnoticed until recently.

When the goldfish was finally discovered, during a recent cleaning of the 10-foot-by-16-foot filtration tank, it measured a whopping 10 inches and appeared to be healthy and robust, despite its pale coloration as a result of living mostly in the dark.

...

The goldfish was among many intended to become fodder for the voracious arapaima...

According to the English-language Rocket News, the tiny goldfish somehow managed to swim through a pipe measuring 1 centimeter in diameter.

That led to the filtration tank, and once safely inside the lonely goldfish fed on scraps of food in water that was pumped in from the main tank.

Because no fish are supposed to be in the filtration tank, aquarium staff never looked closely for living critters during the monthly cleaning of the unit.

But apparently, the goldfish, despite living in the dark, finally became too large to go unnoticed. It was discovered in late April, and has now regained some of its color...

Cool story,I wonder what will become of the goldfish now?

Follow the link, Krich :) The goldfish, not too surprisingly, is a new star of this public aquarium...

yeah I always liked common goldfish, Hardy, never hide nice colors don't need a heater gets large wont terrorize other fish overall the perfect fish

Had a feeder goldfish for my RES turtle that apparently became his friend. Turtle was switched over to pellets after coexisting with the Goldy for about 6 weeks, and my wife thought it would be okay to toss him into our mbuna tank. He lived there for many months as well before falling victim to a demasoni attack lol

I recently helped a buddy set up a thirty gallon tank for his daughter. He bought a few small feeder goldfish to start with and he was amazed when I explained to him how feeders are treated poorly and aren't really intended to live very long after they are purchased.I went on to explain that if well cared for though, they can live quite long and grow to a nice size.

If taken perfect care, there is a good chance some of your friend's goldfishes would outlive him. The chances of perfect care are slim though (in anybody's hands).

As for size, the biggest I have read about was a 3 lb, 15" "Goldzilla" pulled out of Lake Tahoe or somewhere else in the states.

EDIT: Lake Clair, Michigan http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...tches-3lb-15-inch-goldfish-Michigan-lake.html

You're going to need a bigger bowl!

Fisherman Mike Martin landed the catch of his life after he caught a giant goldfish.

He said he was stunned when he pulled the 3lb 15 inch long goldfish from the water in Lake Clair, Michigan.

The 25 year old believes it was once a family pet that was released into the wild and just kept growing.

He said: 'We see them all the time but, to actually catch them is rare.

Fisherman Mike Martin said he'd been fishing the lake for 20 years and never caught a goldfish

Martin caught the giant goldfish while ice fishing for Perch.

He said he thought his catch was just a big perch on the line before he saw what it really was.

'It was kind of a shock,' he said.

Whale: Most pet goldfish barely measure two inches

'I pulled it up and just kind of stared at it for a minute. I really didn’t know what to do with it.'

Most people have only seen goldfish that measure little more than two inches an swim round a small bowl.

Mike said he has contacted state officials to see if he has set a new record for goldfish.

He plans to keep the fish and mount it on his wall.

Goldfish are a member of the carp family and were one of the first fish to be domesticated and kept a pets.

LOL that's lucky gold fish.
As for feeders become a fish in display tank, it's not new to me :) I was purchased 75 feeders smallest size in LFS around 1 inch ($1 for 15) and tossed them in my 75 gallons to cycle a new tank, for some unexpected reasons I couldn't continue my plan for that 75G tank so they are in that 75G for at least 3 years well fed by my girl...She refused to sell them nor give them away, until we moved to new home :) TBH those comet goldfish do look awesome as they grow big. After 3 years those goldfish reached 8 inches and not all of them though, I think we have 45 out of 75 stay alive after 3 years...it's like a koi tank in a house! hahaha
