Here's an easy one for you guys. I'm looking at the Rena XP3 filter, thats rated at 380Gph. They say that one filter is good for tanks up to 160Gal. But I know most guys would run dual XP3, for a total of 760Gph on a 160Gal tank.

Why then do most filter companies, over rate what size a tank a single Canister should be used on? Is there a general guide to how many Gallons per hour you should cycle?

The number of filters depends on many things. I run one 2026 on my 135, but it is fully planted. On my 150 I run a 2080. The gph will depend on the type of fish in the tank. What kind of fish do you keep, and how big, and how many of each?

I agree.

they don't take into cocideration that you have to pump the water up to the top of the tank.

I have never seen one filter actually flow as well as they claim. This is mostly because they rate these without any baskets, media, nor head or piping on the filters.

What is it that the companies say?...

It will handle a ___ tank.

It flows ___ gph.

Made for a ___ tank.

For use on ___ tank.

Hhmmm...they're not exactly fibbing huh?

Just like the stickers on tha tanks at wallyworld 'pacu will grow to 6', they do...then they grow to 10", 15" etc. etc.

That's why we need to educate as many people as will listen.
