What's the ideal Gallon Per Hour a heavily stocked 225 gallon CA/SA cichlid tank should have? I'm considering a Filtration Upgrade. I want To make some monster DIY Canister Filters. Right now i have around 1200 GPH+.

Thanks, -Justin

Its easier to get large turn over rates through a sump and a lot less work. I would say 4k GPH would over filter as a rough answer tovyour question.

I'd love to build a sump, except, I have a few concerns/issue's 1st reason being that the tank is located in the basement, and there is some humidity problems in the summer, so to fight the humidity, we have a dehumidifier, but after a couple days of the dehumidifier running I lose about 2" of tank water, and by the time I go to perform my weekly water change, I've lost about 3"-.3.5" of tank water. So with this issue, the dehumidifier would be taking the original tank water from the sump to drain. Would glass/acrylic tops help this issue? 2nd reason being is I was stupid when I was first planning a sump, i didn't measure the opening of the stand to insert the sump, and I went ahead and bought a 40 breeder, turns out I'm short by a couple inches, and the only other way it could be placed beneath the stand was if I took the all glass tank off, and put it in through the top of the stand, and well money's tight for a new sump tank, and there are no good deals in my area aside from the odd one, once in a blue moon. I would build a sump if I absolutely needed to take the tank off the stand, but I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future.

Thanks, -Justin

put a lid on it to keep moisture in. you can also put the sump alongside the tank, or behind it, even above it.

as far as turn-over, it depends, for particulate filtration it's generally said to run 5x-10x your tank size per hour. for biological filtration 2x-4x per hour so the water is in contact with the bacteria longer.
do some searching and you'll find many opinions on it.
my sump will be mainly biological and I'll be running about 3x an hour for a 245G.
you can use pretty much anything for a sump, many people use rubbermaid tubs. you might even be able to post a trade on-I was going to say craigslist, but your canadian so...kijiji?- your 40 for something that would fit.

Thanks for your suggestions. I may do this. Thanks again. -Justin
