Grade and opinion on food

Thank

I'm already feeding NLS and Hikari to my others fish. But I was wondering if cost isn't an issue, do Grand Sumo food's make a difference to coloration and kok size, knowing that genetic will play the biggest role.

read the link, some people have some pretty in depth knowledge that you can learn something from. It was pretty entertaining as well. I have seen fish have great results on all types of foods. I think the better question is to ask which food is healthier for your fish, let the genetics do the talking if these fish are just for your own display.

I started to read that thread. Good information and quite entertaining as well Haha.

While I'm at it, I have another question in my mind. I heard peoples putting Parrot cichlid with their flowerhorn to put them in a dominant position, therefor "helping" them get a bigger kok. Proven procedure or myth?

It can be but a better method is a mirror. You can buy a bird mirror and float it with a fishing bobber.

Nice FH. That head should turn out HUGE and the red coloration should deepen and expand. Would like to see updates in a few months to see how it turns out.

As far as food don't waste your money and time with Grand Sumo Foods. I've tried it before and didn't see much improvment (though not much harm either). However, the red pellets did make my fish noticably intense red very quick. I eventually decided to just keep him on NLS (sold off the Grand Sumo Pellets) and the red is still just as intense. Just feed it NLS. If it has the genetics the NLS will bring the best out of him and he will have a long healthy life! Don't over feed!

I think the mirror trick is cool and it doesn't hurt! The principle behind it is that the flowrhorn will feel it is the dominant fish. In cichlids the dominant male will normally develop a large or the largest nuchial hump. Dunno if it really works or not, but it doesn't hurt and it is cool to see him flare up and fight the mirror. Color also intensifies during the period the mirrior is introduced. I would feel bad watching a flowerhorn beat the crap out of and even eventually killing a parrot cichlid. The mirror is a great substitute. You can make your own out of an plastic embroidery ring/hoop and a couple of cheap round mirrors all easily found at your local craft store. Loosen the ring/hoop, take a couple of those round mirrors and place them back to back, place the mirrors into the ring/hoop, and tighten the bolt on the top. Then all you have to do is tie some string/fishing line on it and use a float or a stick to suspend it. My FH's love it... or do they hate it? ;)

I will stick with NLS and Hikari, and occasionally give him Grand Sumo Red.

I will follow his progression closely and post update about every months. I hope he will color up when he get older.
