grammode for 40 gallon?

It could work. But grammode have the potential to reach a foot. That does take years but a 40 breeder would be better

Yeah. By the time it's gets that size it'll already be in a bigger tank. Id like to build a huge plywood tank in the next year

A 40 is fine, any tank mates will be nippes at overnight. Just in case you might put another growout in there. Expect some shyness too. My male is about 3 years old and still under 5".

I put 5 one inch grammode juvies in a 75 gal in July 2010 with some dithers, and lots of hiding places, by that Oct, there was just a pair of grammodes left. The remaining pair did spawn in the 75 over the next year, but the male killed his mate soon after the 3rd spawn.
I have had my male for around 2 years. Got him at 2.5". He is just bigger than my 8" net. Currently lives in a 55G with 2 large SD.
