I'm looking to turn an empty 55gallon tank into a wet pet tank, and am considering as many options as possible. I recently started looking at pictures of doviis and grammodes, and while a dovii is surely out of the question, I thinki a grammode will fit into a 55. Let me know if I'm wrong.

But for the sake of knowledge.....I have read that they are kind of shy? Would they make a good wet pet or not? Opinions? Info? Much appreciated

What about their personality? :)

grammodes can fit in a 55G ive seen pairs in them easily. i ahve 8 juvys in a 55G now, they are not shy atall they recognise me and always come up to me for food. they have got some real nice colouring and there only 1-2" in length, you can make any fish into a wet pet, just let him get used to you and recognise you, best to do this at an early age.

Although I agree with almost everything mbunafishkeeper says, I'd have to say that "grammodes" and "personality" are mutually exclusive terms in most cases. I have gone through many grammodes and I finally found one that is somewhat interactive. Groups of very young fish will seem interactive, but once a grammode is housed alone as a single specimen "wet pet", that usually changes. I do think that can be turned around to some degree by spending a lot of time with the fish (as mbunafishkeeper alluded to)and trying different ways of feeding him. I have a male grammode in a 55 gallon tank and he will stay there for life. I use mirrors to get him out in the open and to get his aggression level high. After a while his aggression has been directed at me (actually my finger). But at least he isn't afraid of me. So now I have a 4.5" male grammode that comes out when I approach the tank, doesn't run and hide when I come in the fish room, waits for me to drop pellets in the tank for him to eat, and flares and attacks the glass trying to get my finger. When a grammode flares and goes after you he is at his best IMO. His fins are extended and his colors are turned on. His lower fins actually turn black like I've seen them do when breeding or defending territory.

So go get you some grammodes, grow them up in that 55, keep the best male (actually he may figure that out for you by killing off the rest), and enjoy. It is unlikely that you will get one that acts like a midas or an oscar, but you can train them to be less afraid and more interactive.

ps. They grow so slow they almost seem to shrink. It's like watching paint dry, really.

Mine isn't shy and hide all the time. But then again he isn't extremely social with me either. Regardless there is a lot to like about Grammodes.

Don't forget the gill flaring....that's the best part they look wicked.

they are very slow growers but well worth it, to optimise there growth rate do water changes 50% weekly at least keep a very high amount of oxygen in there water and feed 3-4 times daily. i bought festae in march at 2-3" and now there 3-4" im used to the slow growth but its well worth it, besides even at an inch or 2 they display there blue all over, well in my experiance anyway.
