Although I agree with almost everything mbunafishkeeper says, I'd have to say that "grammodes" and "personality" are mutually exclusive terms in most cases. I have gone through many grammodes and I finally found one that is somewhat interactive. Groups of very young fish will seem interactive, but once a grammode is housed alone as a single specimen "wet pet", that usually changes. I do think that can be turned around to some degree by spending a lot of time with the fish (as mbunafishkeeper alluded to)and trying different ways of feeding him. I have a male grammode in a 55 gallon tank and he will stay there for life. I use mirrors to get him out in the open and to get his aggression level high. After a while his aggression has been directed at me (actually my finger). But at least he isn't afraid of me. So now I have a 4.5" male grammode that comes out when I approach the tank, doesn't run and hide when I come in the fish room, waits for me to drop pellets in the tank for him to eat, and flares and attacks the glass trying to get my finger. When a grammode flares and goes after you he is at his best IMO. His fins are extended and his colors are turned on. His lower fins actually turn black like I've seen them do when breeding or defending territory.
So go get you some grammodes, grow them up in that 55, keep the best male (actually he may figure that out for you by killing off the rest), and enjoy. It is unlikely that you will get one that acts like a midas or an oscar, but you can train them to be less afraid and more interactive.
ps. They grow so slow they almost seem to shrink. It's like watching paint dry, really.
