But them all. You will never really know what a fish is like until you own it. Put them in a big tank with some cover.

get them a 4-5' long tank, and keep a divider on hand, aswell as an eye on there tank. They will test eachothers strength for breeding, so they will lip lock, etc. but these dances do sometimes get violent so you will need to seperate them sometimes. There is also the chance they will just outright kill eachother. (but if you want a pair you'll have to take the risk's involved). I read all the time about dovii or umbee's killing there mates. This is alway a possiblity. give them enough room and cover as Darth mentioned.

IME- after fish have tested eachothers strength, and you have a pair and they have had 1-3 succesful spawns -you won't have to worry about one of them being killed off. The time you have to worry is when they are being introduced to eachother.

Definitely buy them. They are beautiful, and you could sell the fry for a lot.

Grammys are the shiaz.....

I love the ones I got from Darth Odo!

Do it, you will not be sorry! Mine is in a 220 with Festae, Red Devils, Barred Midas, Amarillo, Trimac and a Large Jag~

Not to mention he takes shiaz from nobody.......

If the fish aren't compatible as juveniles they won't be compatible ever. If I were you I would maybe get them from an online breeder. Here are some good websites.

Interesting thought.

As with the majority of juvenile, boisterous cichlids, they can take some time estblishing a stable pecking order. Obviously (the norm.), they haven't been provided with enough space to do so at the lfs, therefore there will and has been casualtie's. At the present time, no doubt they're focused only on establishing dominancy. So if you can provide adequate space for them to do so, a dominant pair should form.(Providing they are of both sexes, ofcourse.)

You have the space......... Let's see the Grammy's.

I've really never had much problem with grammies killing each other when housed together in a 55 gallon or larger and providing cover for them. I have enough cover so that each fish has it's own place to hide, and hide they will. I use all kinds of caves and PVC pipe. I've had as many as 10 at a time for months and they didn't kill each other. Each fish had it's own little nook. When a pair starts to form, the female will turn black.

I think as long as they have plenty of room, cover and possibly some distractions ( dithers) you'll be ok with them.
I currently have 6 in a 8 footer with lots of CA's and they dont bother each other at all. The largest is around 4"+ the smallest around 3"+. Im increasing the group to 9 this weekend. They are slow growing so if you decide to get some, be prepared for the long haul.

ok well i will put them in my 80G tank. with 2 festae around the same size.
